Blog Loving 2.0: An Updated List of Top Economic Development Blogs
March 31, 2015
Three years ago, DCI President Andy Levine wrote a blog post on the top economic development blogs. While these blogs remain reliable sources of ED-related information, below is an expanded list of blogs that all economic developers should bookmark.
CityLab: In May 2014, The Atlantic Cities was re-launched as CityLab, a blog that “informs and inspires the people who are creating the cities of the future—and those who want to live there.” Previous stories from The Atlantic Cities are housed on the site, while new offerings include Navigator, a section dedicated to city lifestyles, and CityFixer, a tool that populates stories by common subjects, including economic development, streets, mass transit and infrastructure.
The Higher ED Blog: Written by a variety of contributors, The Higher ED blog is hosted by EconomicDevelopment.org, a website created by Canadian ED consulting firm Millier Dickinson Blais to help grow the economic development profession. Recent blog topics include inland ports, the ROI of incubators, Netflix documentaries pertinent to economic developers and lessons in regional collaboration.
Site Selection Group’s Blog: The Site Selection Group, a top location advisory firm, fills the Site Selection Group Blog with topics like top distribution deals, labor market trends and the best and worst tax conditions by state. Economic developers should check the site regularly, as the Site Selection Group does a good job of frequently updating the blog.
Strengthening Brand America: Created by Edward Burghard, the blog is “about helping economic development professionals in every state better understand how to leverage the power of place branding as a strategy to become more globally competitive for capital investment.” Ed is a great resource for providing tips on branding for EDCs.
Barberbiz: Dean Barber, owner of Barber Business Advisors, pens this engaging blog. A site selection consultant and consultant to EDOs, Dean is never afraid to tell it like it is.
The Tenant Advisor – CRE Blog: Written by Coy Davidson, a Houston-based commercial real estate professional for Colliers International, The Tenant Advisor often provides comprehensive recaps of the top news stories from the past week on topics like the economy and real estate. These posts can act as a ‘cheat sheet’ for those interested in corporate real estate services but too busy to regularly monitor a large number of sources.
Wise Economy: Written by Della Rucker, a consultant for governments and nonprofits for more than 20 years, Wise Economy covers everything from small businesses to neighborhood revitalization to effective public engagement. After all, according to her website, Della “helps people figure out how to change their community to deal with new economic realities.”
Forbes Economic Development Blog: At the risk of sounding self-promotional, I would be remiss if I didn’t plug Andy Levine’s new “marketing places” blog on Forbes.com Our Chief Creative Officer has been shedding light on everything from talent attraction to how cities can engineer an extreme makeover. Check it out.
