Pandemic Recovery: A View From Travel Media

DCI Insights Report July 20, 2021

Engaging Travel Journalists In A Post-Vaccine World
The pandemic-induced haze is starting to lift from the travel industry as countries around the world roll-out the COVID-19 vaccine. Destinations are once again preparing to welcome travelers.

So how are the editors and writers that curate content for newspapers, magazines, digital platforms and broadcast envisioning the path forward? And are travel public relations professionals adequately funded and prepared to meet their needs?

In partnership with SATW (Society of American Travel Writers), Development Counsellors International (DCI) explored how travel journalists and public relations professionals are faring as we emerge from this global pandemic. Both entities are important partners in recovery initiatives. Therefore, knowing when to pitch and what types of topics to promote are invaluable to destinations’ public relations efforts.

While these findings are indicative of a moment in time, they offer valuable insight into the professional habits of travel journalists as North American destinations prepare to market their destinations to the world and global destinations begin to consider courting North American travelers.

Key findings of this study will help inspire and guide DMO recovery efforts as we look to the end of the COVID-19 crisis and a return to a new wave of traveling again. The full report is available below.
