Governing Magazine Asks: Does Privatizing Economic Development Work?

What do the states of Ohio, Indiana Virginia, Florida, Arizona and Iowa have in common? All have chosen to privatize their state economic development offices, seeking more nimble and effective operations in the intense competition to attract investment and create jobs.

Using Jobs Ohio (the economic development group created by presidential candidate Governor John Kasich) as a backdrop, staff writer Alan Greenblatt looks at this critical question with the insights of a range of third-party experts. His basic conclusion: “There’s no proof that privatizing economic development works any better than old-fashioned agencies.”
